When picturing Aberdeen, most people think of fishing, granite, and oil rigs. Romance is rarely top of the list. But Aberdonians, surrounded by some of the most picturesque countryside in the UK, would beg to differ. We’ve put together a list of the most romantic restaurants in Aberdeen to show that when it comes to amore, “the Deen” is where it’s at.
Definitely one of the coolest eateries in Aberdeen, Carmelite is a hotel and restaurant with decidedly quirky decor. Relax in their dimly lit dining room where the food is as impressive as the colourful seats. There’s something for everyone on the menu, from burgers to 48-hour low and slow pork belly with black pudding and mash. A luscious cocktail menu caters for all tastes, with fruity concoctions like the Pornstar Martini, to stronger tipples like the Kyoto, made with Japanese whisky. All that food and drink gotten too much for you? Book yourself into their bespoke rooms and round off your night at one of the most romantic restaurants in Aberdeen in style.
Howies Chapel Street
In our opinion, anyone who says Scotland isn’t romantic is just wrong. All that wild weather, rolling hills, and “wee drams” is enough to get anyone’s heart aflutter. Which is why Scottish-themed Howies is on our list of the most romantic restaurants in Aberdeen. Settle yourself in on their tartan seats near the roaring fire and peruse their menu of the country’s best produce. Start off with traditional delights like haggis neeps and tatties, or Cullen skink (a creamy fish broth….just trust us) and fill up on a choice of local fish or meat dishes. Round it off with the nation’s favourite drink and your date will think they’ve hit the jackpot.
More relationships have been started through red wine than any other drink. OK, we made that up, but we bet it’s not too far from the truth. Which is why a restaurant named after the delicious Italian wine has to be considered pretty romantic. Feast on fresh, homemade Italian food in a stunningly elegant space in the centre of the city. As you’d expect from an Italian restaurant, there’s a huge selection of pizza and pasta, complimented by a refined fish and meats section if you’re pushing the boat out. Finish up with their selection of delicious desserts (we recommend the tiramisu) and you’ll be leaving with a happy date.
Quite often the best nights are made by the company you keep, including the staff at the restaurant you go to. Serving up delicious Thai food in Aberdeen’s Chaophraya, the waiting team here are some of the friendliest people you’ll ever meet. Whether it’s a big occasion or a special date, you’re sure to feel like you’re having an amazing night. And the food just adds to that feeling. Try out authentic Thai dishes like pad thai or king prawn pineapple fried rice, all expertly prepared by talented chefs. Opulent decor surrounds the dining area, with huge gold Buddhas and marble bar tops. Chaophraya isn’t one of our top picks for romantic restaurants in Aberdeen for nothing….
Situated a little out of the city centre, The Chester Hotel is known for some of the best fine dining in Aberdeen. An imposing building, the dining room is decked out in red and gold, with fine wines lining the walls. Dine out on crisp white linen, a sure-fire way to make you feel like you’re having a special evening. The menu consists of old favourites like scallop and lamb, all topped off with an impressive meat menu, prepared on their Josper charcoal oven. It’s no wonder it was awarded two AA rosettes in 2015. After, we’d recommend retiring to the IX Bar where they serve an unrivalled selection of whiskys from around Scotland in plush surroundings.
The Silver Darling
Dinner overlooking the wild North Sea? It doesn’t get much more romantic than that. Well, that’s exactly what you get at The Silver Darling, situated by the coast in Aberdeen. Housed in the city’s old customs building, The Silver Darling’s dining room is surrounded by glass, meaning it’s the perfect place to admire the view. Capitalising on Aberdeen’s fishing heritage, the venue serves up super-fresh seafood with a modern twist. If you’re not a fish fan, they also have a “from the land” section, complete with curries, burgers, and the obligatory steak served with all the trimmings. Feeling full up after all that? Take a stroll along the Aberdeen coastline for extra romance points.
