Love is the air. And what better way to celebrate love than with food? We’ve scoured  the city and found the five most romantic restaurants in Wellington, ideal for a first date or a 50th Anniversary celebration. Whether you’re looking for a quiet low-key meal or a grand gesture for that someone special, our list is sure to have somewhere that hits the mark.

Bambuchi

Modern New Zealand, Asian Fusion

Step into this suburban oasis for a great date night. Sit at the bar for a beautiful cocktail or a fabulous wine, and grab a seat at the table to enjoy some Southeast Asian flavours chef Maxime has put into the dishes. The interior is cosy and warm, and they’ve designed a shared dining experience menu that’s ideal for a romantic evening with your date. Make sure to check their menu in advance, they change it pretty often to use the freshest and in-season produce.

Mr Go’s

If you’re looking for great Asian cuisine at  reasonable prices, you must try Mr Go’s. This modern Asian restaurant serves all types of delicious Asian dishes, such as Taiwanese steamed buns, bowls, fresh pieces of meats, and delicious baos. Their prices are pretty cheap, so if you’re the one paying, we promise you, you won’t want to jump off a cliff! They have an extensive drinks list featuring local beers, a fine selection of wines, and lip-smacking cocktails – great to create a more relaxed atmosphere and avoid first date embarrassment.

Jardin Grill

If you’re looking to impress your date, take them  to something a bit more upmarket. Located in the prestigious Sofitel, Jardin Grill builds up the most ideal atmosphere for date nights. The interior is sophisticated and enhanced by a dominant copper kitchen and relaxed settings. Their menu reunites many dishes from different regions and cultures. Expect Angus steak, Japanese wagyu, spring risotto, pork belly, and a cheese selection. You might have guessed, their wines are divine and it would be illegal not to order one (or a few) glasses of them.

Counter Culture Board Game Cafe & Bar

There’s nothing better to break the ice than board games. Counter Culture is Wellington’s first dedicated board game cafe and bar, and we personally looove the concept. They offer a wide selection of food for lunch, brunch, and dinner, as well as great coffee, wine cocktails, and beers. It’s a fun and romantic restaurant in Wellington that will certainly help you connect with your date or revive the flame with your partner.

Shed 5

If you’re looking for a truly romantic venue in town, head to Shed 5. This seafood restaurant occupies one of the oldest wharf stores in Lambton Harbour, offering beautiful views of Wellington Harbour. The fish ise freshly caught and the wine has been meticulously selected, and they’re a true joy. Who said a romantic date had to be during the night? When the sun is shining, Shed 5’s dining area expands to include an outdoor courtyard with great views. Don’t miss out on this one, it’s surely one of our favourite romantic restaurants in Wellington.
