About The Brierley at Acklam Hall
The Brierley offers a unique dining experience within the beautiful Acklam Hall, Middlesbrough's only Grade I listed building.
The Brierley is named after York architect Walter Brierley, one of the finest architects of the early twentieth century who was appointed by the Hustler family in 1910 to undertake alterations to Acklam Hall.
Home to The Salon and The Dining Room, two beautiful and unique rooms providing the perfect setting to indulge and enjoy.
Afternoon Tea is served daily 12.00 - 16.00
Had Sunday lunch here after having had a really lovely, if a little expensive dinner a couple of weeks before. It was ok but wasn’t really hot enough and served on cool plates, so soon went cold. It’s was quite busy and we were given the dinner menu by mistake. We asked for the bill, but after waiting ten minutes, made our way to the bar area to pay. Only ok , I’m afraid and a little expensive for what it was!
Lovely Sunday dinner and good service. The beef was delicious with a tasty cauliflower cheese and roasted veg and the desserts were delicious too.
Generally we were pleased with the meal but did feel the portion sizes on some of meals (fishcake starter / cod main / jam rolypoly) were small and therefore not great value for money
We did have to wait an hour before we were served, even after pre booking and sending our choices prior to coming,It was a Birthday celebration and it did put us behind with our arrangements for the rest of the day.I also thought the wine was rather expensive.Everything else was lovely thank you.x
Very pleasant visit. The food service and atmosphere is excellent.
I had French Tost with Sreaky Bacon and a pot of tea, my husband had the Traditional Breakfast with coffee. We both really enjoyed our meals, with excellent service. My husband who is always doing Trip Adviser reviews put a glowing report of our visit. Many thanks we look forward to coming again as we only live a 10 minute walk away
My son and I greatly enjoyed our recent afternoon tea at Acklam Hall. The food was plentiful, varied and beautifully presented and the soft music, comfy chairs and peaceful atmosphere made for a relaxing afternoon.. Staff were happy to provide nut free options for me and were friendly and chatty towards my son who has autism. Thank you so much everyone.
Yet again a superb meal with excellent friendly service, looking forward to our next visit.
Food is lovely and well presented. Service is friendly. The only negative comment is that the rooms are always on the chilly side. It is not cosy. If I coud suggest anything it would be to have an area with comfortable seating which is warm and cosy to have a drink or coffee after a meal.
Great quality, great service, great food! A lovely treat and experience.
We all thoroughly enjoyed our afternoon - the food was excellent quality and therefore great value for money. We had an extra guest arrive part way through our booking and the staff were very accomodating for this too. Lovely atmosphere to enjoy a belated Mother's day.
I had high hopes for afternoon tea at The Brierly and although the sandwiches were nothing to write home about and even a little unappetising, if I’m being really honest, the cakes and sweets were delicious, especially the macaroons and lemon meringue tarts. The cheese scones were truly excellent too. The dining room was warm, stylish, cosy and relaxed and a very pleasant retreat on a freezing cold snowy day but unfortunately the service was a real let down. Our waiter plonked our heavy cake stands unceremoniously right in front of us, obscuring our views of each other, instead of placing them them mid table where they could be reached by all who were sharing, demonstrating a total lack of common sense and, one assumes, waiting experience. At no point did any member of staff check whether we were happy with our meals or ask whether we needed anything, like more tea, for example, which we did. We had to go and find someone to ask. And again, when we wanted to pay our bill, we had to leave the room again to find a member of staff to ask. We were seated at the far end of the room at a lovely table but it appears that it was too far from the door to be on the waiters’ radars. I’m not some one who wants to be fussed over by waiting staff but to be left completely unattended is not acceptable to me. I found the staff slow, inattentive and sullen, with the exception of the girl who first showed us to our table and took our order. She was very pleasant and seemed on the ball but I can’t say the same of any of the others. I don’t think I saw one of them crack a smile. It felt like they really couldn’t be bothered and that is not an experience that I’d willingly pay for again. There’s a lot of competition out there for good afternoon teas these days and experienced, courteous and attentive staff are part of the experience and essential if you want your restaurant to stand out from the crowd. I’ve had some exceptional dining experiences at The Brierly but sadly this was not one of them. I would hope that this was just a blip but the next time I take my family out for a treat I will be booking elsewhere.
Another fabulous lunch yesterday. Great food and service The duck was delicious.
Our third visit, will be back!
Lovely afternoon tea, a real treat with great service nothing too much trouble
Service was lovely and a wonderful place, but you don't get a lot for your money, we were recommended to order two afternoon teas if we are hungry, but we still left hungry the sizes are tiny!
A lovely Caeser salad and my friends also loved their fish/ beef burger and turbot . Thank you!
The children’s meals we ordered were disappointing. The mash potatoe was sweet potato mash, this should have been specified on the menu, my children didn’t eat their mains.
Visiting from Australia and lovely to see the beautiful restoration of the old building from as I remember it when I was at school here in the 1950's.Great to see the photos and memorabilia of Acklam Hall Grammar school. It would be lovely to see a few plaques explaining what the various rooms used to be in the days when it was Acklam Hall Grammar school.
Had a really lovely mother’s day Was a bit worried about the late booking, my son was disappointed there was no lamb , but we all had beef and it was very nice Thank you to all your staff , all very attentive and professional
There was a very long wait between first course and main course, over an hour. We accepted this as it was Mother's Day and the restaurant was very busy. On any other occasion this would not have been acceptable.
What a stunning venue to have an amazing meal cooked to perfection and for service like no other! Had a the best Mother's Day lunch at Acklam hall and we can't stop telling people about our experience! Worth every single penny. The staff have the service mastered, very helpful, very polite and check on you if there is anything you need. Can't thank you enough and we will definitely be back! Thank you all so much!!
Fantastic food in a brilliant setting only slight downside was waiting 20 minutes for a pre booked table.
Lovely meal in a fabulous restaurant.
Beautiful place and surroundings
